Effect on Emotions
- To me, mindfulness equals self-awareness. When you are self-aware, even when things are not going the way that you want, [it's important] that you don't get too hung up and you are not having emotional ups and downs.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I meditate once every two or three days and I empty my mind and just focus on my breathing.
- Because of my martial arts training, breathing is a big part of what I do. [Breathing is important] even when you're speaking & communicating, using your voice, projecting from the diaphragm.

Bullying Story
- I was bullied every week [during school years]. One day I was in the cafeteria. I was eating my lunch that my mom had made for me.
- This kid came over and grabbed my hair and yanked my head back. He yelled at me, “why are you looking at me like this”. I wasn't looking at him. He said, “you wanna fight?”
- I was a skinny little guy of 110 pounds and I didn't want to fight. So he had his friends with him and he dragged me by the hair, out of the cafeteria, all the way out to the playground area.
- This happened in front of a lot of people because it was lunchtime. Then he beat the crap out of me. He had me on the ground and was kicking me. Then he yelled, “don't you look at me again.”
- Then he made some racist comments and walked away. I was crying and there were bruises and blood.
- I was so afraid. I went home to my mom and she asked me why I got into fights. I didn't even want to explain.
- I was getting beat up for no reason. I didn't know the language and I had no friends. There was a lot of resentment and a lot of anger. It was a very difficult time.
