I officially as of right now am taking your podcast over Bruce. All right, go for it. I'll tell, I'll tell you guys how this all came about, by the way, Bruce and I were friends. We talk often we share knowledge. He helps me. I help him and it wasn't too long ago. I said, Bruce, I said, you need to do a podcast on your own podcast. You've got so much that people don't know about you. And he agreed. And here we are. So let me go, let me tell you guys a little bit about Bruce Langford that you may or may not know, but Bruce Langford is a mindfulness speaker. He's a writer, a life coach, a consultant. He's the founder of the mindful minute mindfulness mode podcast, which you guys are all very familiar with. Tell me, Bruce. I think we checked last time I checked, you're at like 1.6 million downloads of your podcast. Where are we at?
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
Well, it's taken a lot of work, but we are actually over 2 million downloads. It's 2.1 and pushing toward 2.2 million downloads.
Chris Patterson:
2.2 million downloads. You're doing something really well. That's that's amazing. Bruce has extensive experience in bullying prevention, enabling him to help other people who have been bullied or who are experiencing self-bullying. We're going to get into that. I want to ask you some questions about self-bullying. That's very interesting. Bruce has delivered more than 1700 live presentations and his writings have appeared in numerous publications around the world. So with that said, Bruce, welcome to your own podcasts with me taking over your podcast, Chris,
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
It's great to be here. Thank you. Thank you for the warm welcome and the nice words.
Chris Patterson:
Of course. So let's start off like this, you know, I, I'm actually curious, give us a little bit of background, you know, who are you? You didn't just all of a sudden have this overnight unbelievably successful podcast and consultancy and all of those things. Where did all this start? Where did they all come from?
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
Well, I was a teacher and I loved teaching and I was a music teacher. So I've got that creative thing going on, loved doing the music teaching. But what I didn't love was when I saw kids that were being picked on and bullied. And I mean, I thought, man, this should not be happening. And it made me think of my son who at that time was just a little kid. He was around four or five years old and I thought, man, I don't want my son to get bullied. I don't want him to get picked on. So I got this idea of, you know, I'm going to switch and I'm going to start working in this field and I'm going to help as many people as I can. And through that, I'll be able to help my son be a strong kind of guy that will know how to stand up to bullying, know how to deal with it.
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
You know, not just like be able to punch people out like his, which is what sometimes people think is how you have to deal with it. And so I doing presentations all over the place and I started doing so many talks and keynote addresses and stuff. And then I, it just happened that, you know, all of a sudden people started to identify me as the anti-bullying guy. I was, you know, sometimes they said I was the bullying guy. I wasn't sure whether that was quite right, but, but anyway, so that's what happened. And I started doing all that. And then I, I just realized that I really loved doing live presentations. I loved helping people. And you know, I would go back to some of the same schools and people would come up to me and they would say, you know, I remember when you were here before and I was being picked on and I did some of the stuff you taught me.
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
And, you know, I was just experiencing so much pain and my life was so miserable. And, and then after I started doing some of these things you taught in the presentation, then, you know, my life has turned around. So I really liked that. And then later I started working in mindfulness and started coaching and found I could do the same thing in coaching and help adults who are experiencing a lot of pain and suffering. And even though a lot of times, their life looked amazing inside. They were experiencing a lot of overwhelm and frustration and I could kind of help them with that and move through to bring them to a better place.
Chris Patterson:
So, Bruce, essentially, you kind of have worked things a little bit backwards where you started essentially group coaching people because in your presentations, that was a group coaching session essentially. And then you went more one-on-one and started working with individuals and that type of thing, right? Yeah. That's right. How did, how did the anti-bullying knowledge and everything else help you with the coaching process?
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
Wow. It was amazing because through doing the anti-bullying, I realized that not only do people bully each other, I mean in business, in life everywhere, not just kids, but a lot of times we bully ourselves, you know, we have this inner voice going on and, and it can be just brutal and it can pull people down who are like intelligent, successful people who, you know, have everything going for them. But this voice in their head can cause so many issues and can just stop them in their tracks. And they can end up having so much pain and frustration and feeling overwhelmed. And so, because of what I learned doing the bullying prevention, it sort of gave me the tools so I could help people deal with that voice.
Chris Patterson:
That's so wonderful. And I assume that you're now, you're now you're starting to work with companies and employees and individuals. One of the things I was curious about is how can companies continue to thrive? I mean, obviously we're in an unprecedented time right now, we're still in the midst of a global pandemic. It's, it's disrupted everything. And you know, so there are people that are scared out there. There are people that are really struggling right now. So how can companies continue to thrive even while employees are experiencing stress and disconnection?
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
Well, the thing is, everybody needs more confidence than ever. They just need to be lifted up. They need to know that somebody cares and that somebody behind them and, you know, they need to be noticed for what they're doing. That's positive for their accomplishments. And of course, that can happen through the leaders in that company, whether they're project leaders or the CEOs like you, I'm sure Chris, you lift up people that work for you and you give them confidence and support and you know, they just need those leaders out there. They're everywhere. They just need to be reminded that what they're doing is right when they're lifting people up and building their confidence and helping them to feel empowered and strong, and some leaders are afraid of that. Some leaders are afraid they'll be seen as a, as a pushover. There'll be seen, maybe not as strong if they're always helping and always encouraging when in fact that is completely incorrect. Wouldn't you agree with that, Chris?
Chris Patterson:
Oh, yeah, of course. I mean, I've, I've seen some of those pictures where they show, you know, a leader yelling from the back, you know, go, go, go, and everyone's stressed out and freaked out. And then he got a leader pulling from the front. And I think that's what we want to do is we want to pull our people with us in the lead. The rate of the leader is determined by the earth. The speed of the pack is determined by the rate of the leader. So I agree with you. It's so important for people to lead right now. It's so important for people to get outside themselves and think about their own employees. So I just love what you're sharing. Tell us some of the things that you're seeing, what are some of the challenges that people are experiencing with, you know, this COVID-19 and maybe even in your own family, because these are real problems. So tell me what kind of challenges and pain that people are experiencing right now?
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
Well, the challenge of not knowing what's coming, and that's always a challenge for people, you know, we don't know how long this lockdown is going to be. We don't know, you know, when we can get our haircut, you know, there are so many things that impact people and you know, a lot of it is to do with finances. Like a lot of people, you know, they've either lost their jobs or maybe they're just unsure whether their job is going to continue. And, you know, there's just so much insecurity out there. And then you look on social media or you listen to the news and, you know, people are all over the place. You know, there are people arguing and some people believe one thing and some people believe in other things, and we're not always getting consistent messages from our, our leaders, you, our politicians and so on.
Bruce Langford, Stand Up Now Blueprint:
And that can cause a lot of insecurity. So not only our employees experiencing insecurity, but our leaders in business are as well. And that's some of the, what, you know, that's actually what I do is I help people to gain confidence to realize that they're on the right track. And so, you know, it's just a really tough time right now, but at the same time, it is a time to thrive because there are a lot of opportunities, opportunities for people who are strong leaders to kind of take the reign and move forward and help those that need help. Yeah.
